		<description>HRS: The Hammer Reading Series
A Cultural Identity System

HRS is an embellished iteration of the existing public program at the Armand Hammer Museum in Los Angeles. Rather than hold straight readings, HRS proposes to integrate the spoken word with visual media and visiting artists. What you see here is an identity system in which code represents text – acts as a visual shorthand and a mediator in meaning.

Merging technologies from two different eras, Impalpable Descriptivism is a participatory writing system and reactive audio sculpture that performs the printed word as score. It is a text to phone to email to phone to fax to camera to data to noise system. Through the use of a restrained, ubiquitous mobile input method (text messaging), participants are asked to deliver a detailed real space account (the printed facsimile) of something seemingly insignificant, mundane or otherwise difficult to put into words. By asking participants to push beyond the surface and communicate the subject in a more verbose way than is necessary, a narrative-based inquiry develops. As messages traverse the system, their resulting facsimiles are employed in real time as score. This exploration of asynchronous collective performance creates a sound work composed entirely from the sounds and literature of mundane objects and actions.

Myriad Accounts is a functioning real time reading and writing system, designed to illuminate the nuance of language. The system is a fully realized application – a reading, writing and performance interface. As a culmination of my investigations into linguistic variance, the system is built to reposition readers and writers, and to expand the palette of methods with which happenings may be recorded through text.

The live demonstration pictured above is a performance of this project, which took place at my graduate thesis exhibition, 4 HOURS SOLID in the ACCD Media Design Program. These are three writers writing simultaneously about their surroundings into the Myriad Accounts system. Their text is being filtered through the program, reformatted and projected in real time on the wall behind them. Each column of text projected corresponds to its writer. The program scans all of these words to find "topics" in the text; when "common topics" are found (meaning more than one writer has written about said topic), the topical phrase is displayed in bold-faced type. This is evidenced in the photographs above, wherein "red hoodie" and "tequila" are common, bold-faced topics.

Through the use of HTML, js, node, web sockets, and the Alchemy API's topical analysis, this system has become a fully functioning live publishing platform.

LOOK THINK WRITE is an authoring system for emerging screenwriters. Through this workspace, writers may incorporate visual, textural and sensory media with script, in the brainstorming process and amongst each other. This is especially useful in a classroom setting, where a group of people must communicate an idea. Inspirational imagery and sensory elements may be exchanged to inform that converation.

Furthermore, by giving the screenplay a tangible counterpart, it becomes a more malleable, flexible entity; it can be shaped and molded with ease and intuition.

The system has been designed through four devices, which communicate between each other through cloud data technology.

- The Writer's Notebook serves as a brainstorming tool and a capturing device. A sheet of e-paper, equipped with a camera, may be inserted into any notebook. From there, the writer's notebook may be used to brainstorm (as it is in the traditional sense), plus it can capture video, audio and stills.

- The captured information flows into Blocks. Wooden blocks are the housing unit for collected content and inspirational material. By way of mini, short throw projectors, these blocks can project this information on any surface, anywhere.

Each block is meant to house the information for one "beat" (plot point) / character / location. They also sync with the written screenplay for easy editing. The blocks can be rearranged to change the order of actions or arranged side by side to compare material. Data may be shared between blocks and amongst writers.

- Snifters are the housing devices for scent. The writer may capture scent at any time and relay that data back to a snifter. When they return to the studio or the classroom, snifters may open to fill the room with the scent of a corresponding location in the film or perhaps the smell of a character's perfume.

- A Swatch &#38; Material Book is also present in this new ecology of writing. Textures are given to the writer as a Pantone book may be given to a designer. This book may be added to as well. By collecting textures, the writer may explore an their senses with the immediacy and intuition of textural references.

This space is a step forward from the Radiant Hut prototype. It is a second exploration into a growing line of inquiry for me as a designer: how to activate space, how to make light tangible. Through a series of experiments with materials form the Colors, Materials &#38; Trends Lab (CMTEL) at Art Center, I am discovering ways in which to create pockets of space for interaction. In this case, the hut is a supporting structure for a hexagonal window. Constructed out of Aluminum Honeycomb, 3M Radiant Light Film and MDF, I built an interface for molding light.

By pivoting the window frame or tilting the side panels, the inhabitant of this space is able to increase or decrease visibility to the outside. They may shift and refract the incoming light. Through this interaction, pockets of activated space are created.

This structure explores the way space can change dynamically with light as the key material. Imagine how varied public space could become by applying this method. Lit corners could invent a new form of housing for intimacy, privacy, play or chance encounters.

<description>The hut is a study in space, light, materiality and hybrid digital / physical interaction. It is the resulting work from a visit to Art Center's CMTEL (Color, Material &#38; Trends Exploration Laboratory) with Elise Co's Material Worlds Studio. With samples from the lab, I designed a first pass at this Radiant Environment. The space explores an intersection between digital interaction, mechanical gadgetry and re-purposed material.

Lighting System
Spotlights shine through 3M Radiant Light Film. A pan and tilt double servo setup with arm attachments holds the film before the light. One arm is fixed while the other moves with the servos to contort the Film.

Hut Structure
The hut is constructed out of honeycomb aluminum panels and cardboard (to be replaced in the next pass). The aluminum picks up the glow of the Radiant Light Film as the panels reflect it and refract it through the space.

Select panels will have Radiant Light film mounted more closely for an intensified effect.

&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/13346/324769/21.jpg" width="648" height="486" width_o="648" height_o="486" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/0/13346/324769/21_o.jpg" data-mid="1413526"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

Control
The pan and tilt servos are controlled remotely so the light may change dynamically for those occupying the hut. Sensors are connected to a make controller, which talks to a Flash App. Using the NET Lab Toolkit and AS3, the App responds to sensor inputs. The input communicates with the app to swivel the two servo robots and, in turn, affect the diffused light.
